Dr. Peter Nordland

While W. Peter Nordland DMD, MS is a board certified periodontist with The American Academy of Periodontology, he is also one of the few Fellows of the prestigious American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the only member from San Diego. He, along with Drs. P.D. Miller and Edward Pat Allen, co-founded the ISPPS. Serving as the president, Dr. Nordland played a pivotal role in leading and managing the ISPPS for more than 30 years. ISPPS welcomes periodontists and oral surgeons with an interest in esthetic oral plastic surgery. With his development of this plastic surgery sub-specialty, he is considered an expert in the field of Oral Plastic Surgery. Dr. Nordland has introduced many new surgical procedures and has developed his own microsurgical instrumentation. He enjoys teaching and has been the director of the Oral Microsurgical Residency Program at the Newport Coast Oral-Facial Institute, is an Assistant Professor of Periodontics at Loma Linda University and has taught at almost every US dental school. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Nordland has presented over 400 professional papers and lectures internationally for esteemed organizations such as the American Dental Association, The American College of Prosthodontists, The American Academy of Periodontology, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, The Academy of Osseointegration, The International Dental Federation, The American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, and many of the state dental associations including, New York, Texas and California. Dr. Nordland has authored or co-authored three textbooks, written chapters and several journal publications on Periodontal Plastic Surgery. Dr. Nordland published a landmark paper on surgical correction of the lost interdental papilla. Dr. Nordland wrote Chapter 37 titled Oral Plastic Surgery for the newest textbook, Esthetics in Dentistry published in 2018. Another one of his recent publications appears in The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry titled, “The Connective Tissue Graft as a Biological Alternative to Class V Restorations. Last year he wrote “Restoration of Lost Interdental Papilla: A surgical Technique” for The Compendium of Clinical Education in Dentistry.
