International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons
Over three decades ago, Dr. P.D. Miller brought together a small group of forward-thinking clinicians united by a shared curiosity and a common challenge: advancing predictable approaches in root coverage and periodontal plastic surgery at a time when outcomes were still considered highly variable.
With the crucial early support from Dr. Peter Nordland (who directed and ran the society as president for roughly two decades) and Dr. Edward Pat Allen, what began as an informal exchange of ideas quickly evolved into a focused, collaborative study group. Dr. Miller’s vision was central from the outset, creating a forum where leading clinicians could openly share techniques, outcomes, and innovations that were reshaping what was thought possible in periodontal therapy.
As momentum grew, the society expanded its global footprint. The addition of Dr. Yoshihiro Ono, now Head of International Affairs on the Board of Directors, established key international ties. Over time, those global connections deepened further through the contributions of Drs. Peter Raetzke, Daniele Etienne, Robert Azzi, and Soren and Karin Jepsen, as well as current Board member Dr. Gopalakrishnan Dharmarajan.
This early study group ultimately evolved into the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons (ISPPS), an organization built on scientific rigor, collegial exchange, and a commitment to advancing the art and science of periodontal plastic surgery. Annual invitations were extended to surgeon-educators who shared a passion for innovation, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
 Today, ISPPS is a global society of leading dental specialists, most of whom are full-time clinicians and educators dedicated to advancing the field through research, teaching, and surgical innovation. The Society convenes annually on the eve of the American Academy of Periodontology meeting, where members present cutting-edge, often unpublished research, novel techniques, and refinements in periodontal plastic and reconstructive surgery.
ISPPS continues to serve as a highly focused forum for advancing esthetic and functional outcomes in periodontal therapy, with a sustained commitment to improving long-term patient care through innovation, evidence, and shared expertise.
