Over three decades ago, Dr. P.D. Miller brought together a small group of forward-thinking clinicians united by a shared curiosity and a common challenge: advancing predictable approaches in root coverage and periodontal plastic surgery at a time when outcomes were still considered highly variable.

What began as an informal exchange of ideas quickly evolved into a focused, collaborative study group dedicated to regenerative and reconstructive periodontal surgery. Dr. Miller’s vision was central from the outset, creating a forum where leading clinicians could openly share techniques, outcomes, and innovations that were reshaping what was thought possible in periodontal therapy.

As momentum grew, the group expanded to include internationally recognized surgeons and educators who were eager to contribute to and learn from this unique exchange of expertise. The dialogue proved transformative. New concepts in periodontal plastic surgery emerged, techniques were refined, and the field began a clear shift toward regenerative and esthetic-driven outcomes.

This early study group ultimately evolved into the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons (ISPPS), an organization built on scientific rigor, collegial exchange, and a commitment to advancing the art and science of periodontal plastic surgery. Annual invitations were extended to surgeon-educators who shared a passion for innovation, collaboration, and clinical excellence.

Today, ISPPS is a global society of leading dental specialists, most of whom are full-time clinicians and educators dedicated to advancing the field through research, teaching, and surgical innovation. The Society convenes annually on the eve of the American Academy of Periodontology meeting, where members present cutting-edge, often unpublished research, novel techniques, and refinements in periodontal plastic and reconstructive surgery.

ISPPS continues to serve as a highly focused forum for advancing esthetic and functional outcomes in periodontal therapy, with a sustained commitment to improving long-term patient care through innovation, evidence, and shared expertise.

The mission of the International Society for Periodontal Plastic Surgeons (ISPPS) is to advance periodontal plastic surgery through ethical innovation, clinical excellence, and collaborative education.
